The Topeka community, the Hayden Catholic family, and generations of players are mourning the loss of Coach Tom Stringer, who passed away on Friday at the age of 64. A true legend in Kansas high school football, Coach Stringer leaves behind an extraordinary legacy defined by leadership, excellence, and an unwavering devotion to the young men he guided both on and off the field.
A proud 1979 graduate of Hayden, Tom’s journey is one of remarkable achievement and heartfelt loyalty. After earning first-team All-America honors at Pittsburg State University as an offensive lineman, he returned to the place that shaped him—Hayden Catholic High School. From 1992 to 2006, he served as the Wildcats’ head football coach, building a program rooted in discipline, unity, and heart. His leadership brought Hayden its first-ever Class 4A state championship in 1998, an unforgettable 13–0 season, followed by a second undefeated state title in 2004. The Wildcats’ identity, pride, and tradition of excellence bear his unmistakable imprint.
Tom’s coaching record—131 wins and 35 losses over 15 seasons—speaks to his mastery of the game, but the true measure of his impact lies in the lives he touched. From practice fields to locker rooms, Coach Stringer shaped young men into confident athletes and responsible leaders. His voice, his intensity, and his deep belief in every player created an environment where character, commitment, and resilience were equally as important as touchdowns and trophies.
His peers honored him throughout his career. He earned a place in the Pittsburg State Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Hayden Catholic Hall of Fame in 2023, a moment he described as deeply meaningful. In his own words, “Every day I think about this place. Every day.” Tom’s devotion to Hayden was profound, and that devotion was returned tenfold by all who admired and respected him.
Coach Stringer was also set to receive another distinguished honor: induction into the Kansas Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame on December 7—a testament to a career defined by excellence, integrity, and service to the sport he loved.
